GSO - Delta Above and Below Wing Breakrooms Renovation
Project type
Airline Breakrooms Renovation
Date
May 2024
Location
Greensboro, North Carolina
Delta Air Lines successfully completed a comprehensive refresh of its breakrooms located in the Above Wing (AW) and Below Wing (BW) areas at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) and Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI). The project aimed to enhance employee spaces through extensive renovations that improved both functionality and aesthetics. The scope of work included the demolition of existing walls, furniture, equipment, and fixtures, followed by the installation of updated ceilings, lighting, flooring, millwork, and cabinetry. Electrical upgrades added new power strips for lockers and improved lighting fixtures, while plumbing work addressed the installation of ice makers and other fixtures. Mechanical and fire suppression systems were also modified to align with updated layouts and requirements.
The design featured modern finishes, including carpet and luxury vinyl tiles, polished concrete floors, and Armstrong acoustical ceiling tiles for noise reduction. Furniture and storage solutions were upgraded with ergonomic and durable materials, integrating new cabinetry and countertops with laminate finishes. The project incorporated coordinated layouts for enhanced utility, seamless integration of technological systems, and accent colors to elevate the aesthetic appeal.
Safety and compliance were key aspects of the project, with strict adherence to local, state, and federal regulations, including AATC and DOA guidelines. Construction was carefully phased to avoid disruption to airport operations, with clear separation of active and construction areas and critical-path scheduling. Mobilization began in July 2022 for RDU, and the PTI renovations in 2023 focused on Level II alterations to improve employee comfort and functionality.
The project was completed by J&J Construction, with MHAworks, P.A., serving as the architects and Atlantec Engineers, P.A., providing engineering support. Together, they delivered a refreshed breakroom environment that enhanced the employee experience, complied with safety and operational standards, and boosted morale with modern, functional, and visually appealing spaces. This project demonstrated Delta's commitment to creating supportive and well-designed spaces for its workforce.
